Rain Clutter Control, using RAIN and FTC
Theradarcanseeechoesfromrainorsnow.Returnsfromstormareasandrain
squallsconsistof countlesssmallechoesthatcontinuouslychangesize,
intensity,andposition.Thesereturns,showninFigure 3-8,sometimesappear
aslarge hazy areas,dependingontheintensity oftherainfallorsnowinthe
stormcell.
TheRAIN and FTC controlsareusedto reducethisclutter,sothattargets
maskedby the cluttercan be seen on theradar picture.
•TheRAIN controlis usedtoreduce largecluttermassesaroundyour vessel
causedby rainorsnow.
•TheFTC (FastTime Constant)controlisused to reduce rainclutteratadis-
tancefrom yourvessel,such as that shown below.

When the FTC control is turnedup,onlytheleadingedgeoflarge (rainclutter)
echoesis displayed,whilethe effecton smaller(ship)echoesis onlyslight.
Thismeans thatyoucanalsousethe controlon shorterrangesto distinguish
betweentwo verycloseechoeson thesamebearing,which may otherwise
mergeandappearas one echo.
Whenthe FTC controlis turnedup, the receiverislesssensitive,andthereis a
reduction ofbackgroundnoiseand fill-inreturnsfrom land and largetargets.
Youshouldthereforeturnthecontroldownwhenitsuseisnotrequired.Since
stormcellsareusuallyvisiblefor longdistancesduetotheirextreme altitude,
youmay wish to leave them displayedso thatyoucanobservethe locationof
badweather.
If you turn the RAIN or FTC controlOff(equivalent to setting thelevel to 0%),
theactualsettingis stored,and restoredwhen you turnthecontrolon again.
Note:RAIN and FTC are resetto Off at power-on.
