Chapter 1: Overview 1-19
Asyoupressa key,a singleaudio beepconfirms the key action.If the key-
pressis notvalidfor the currentscreen ormode,threerapid beepssound to
indicatethatno response isavailable.Ifrequired,you can turn the key beeps
offaspartof your set up procedure(see Chapter 7).
Soft Keys
Thefourkeys below thescreenare calledsoft keys becausetheirfunctions
changeaccordingto the operation.The softkeys are groupedinto relatedsets
andsubsetsprovidingaccessto the variousfunctions. Thesoft key labelsare
displayedonthescreenjustabovethekeys.Thedefaultsoftkeysaredisplayed
untilyou pressakey, or selectan item onthe screen;the softkeysassociated
withthe actionare then displayed.
Thecurrentlyselectedsoftkeyoptionisshownbyitsgreenbackground.Ifthe
keytext is displayedin grayratherthan in black,it is not currentlyavailable.
Whenyou press a softkey one of thefollowinghappens:
i. Theassociatedoperation is actioned,e.g. NORTH UP.
ii. Asub-setofsoftkeys is displayed,providingfurtherfunctions.
iii. Apop-upmenu is displayed,providingfurther options.
Aswithdedicated keys,when you pressa soft key a singleaudio beep
confirmsthekeyaction.Ifthekey-press is not validforthecurrentscreenor
mode,three rapidbeeps sound to indicatethatnoresponseisavailable.If
required,youcanturnthe key beepsoffaspartof your set up procedure(see
Chapter 7).
Pop-Up Menus
Pop-upmenus usuallyprovideset up options.When a pop-upmenu is on-
screen, a set of associated soft keys is also displayed as shown in Figure 1-7.
Youusethetrackpadtoselectan optionfrom the menu, thenusethe
appropriate softkeytosettheoption.Forexample,you can togglethe OFF
TRACK ALARM on/off.
